Chris asked if I’d be Cathy and his Asylum Chapel Wedding Photographer following a recommendation by his friend Russ whose fantastic gay wedding I had recently shot in Islington. He warned me that he was marrying his fiancé in a chapel with “odd lighting.” Intrigued I followed the link he sent to the Asylum Chapel in Peckham, London. I couldn’t have replied quickly enough telling Chris I’d LOVE to be their wedding photographer for the day. The Asylum is a Grade II listed building built in 1826 that was bombed during the war. Miraculously the stained glass windows were left largely intact, but the building certainly was left with a distressed look to it that just screams unique and special. I absolutely loved it and the lighting was actually rather gorgeous with a few hanging fairy lights and candles.
Their day was absolutely full of fun and laughter. Both Chris and Cathy were confident, relaxed, warm, lovely people whose obvious joy permeated throughout their guests and possibly beyond the walls of the Chapel. Everyone had a fantastic time and the gorgeous fresh summer food provided by Stephanie Boote and her friendly team certainly helped! Delicious! After a quick thank you to the fab Asylum manager Tash, we boarded a Routemaster bus to the awesome East Dulwich Tavern in (unsurprisingly) East Dulwich. Their upstairs space was ideal for a relaxed, fun wedding like Chris and Cathy’s. There was a lovely atmosphere as Chris and Cathy awarded the winners of their ‘Bake Off’ competition (ingenious idea to get loads of people to bring you cake) and the frivolity erupted into dancing late into the night. One epic wedding I won’t be forgetting for some time.
