London gay wedding photography
From the moment Chris asked me to be their London wedding photographer, I was very excited. Chris is an old friend and knowing him, I knew this wedding would be very unique. Most obviously there were two grooms and no bride, but there were also many more brilliant breaks from tradition that made this day truly unforgettable.

I met them on the day of their wedding in their flat in Archway struggling with their bow ties. Although nerves were rising as time ticked on and the bow ties were being as stubborn as bow ties possibly could be, a happy excitement was in the air. We skipped along to catch the tube at Archway, got off at Angel, hailed a cab and in super speedy time we were at Islington Town Hall for the wedding of the year. Russ and Chris entered the room together to applause as their excitement and joy was felt and enjoyed by everyone. The formalities of the service were short, the informalities such as impromptu dancing and surprise Sea Shanty choir were happily not. Without the knowledge of their imminent arrival, the guests looked stunned when a choir entered singing beautiful old folk songs. Chris and Russ are also members of the choir and joined them as they filled the room with an incredibly moving sound. Chris in fact bravely sang solos in their second song without a hint of any nerves. Other breaks from tradition included not the giving of rings, but the giving of poetry and chip spice. I’m not joking. It was awesome.

A Routemaster bus whisked us away in style to a fantastic candle lit venue nearer to their home – St John’s Tavern, Junction road. En-route Chris and Russ jumped off for few quick impromptu shots on one of the bridges crossing the Thames. Initially they had told me that they didn’t want any posed shots at all of them or groups apart from just one of everyone altogether. Although I relished the opportunity to be a pure photojournalist I was happy they changed their minds at the last minute to have a couple of “posed” shots. The whole group shot in front of the bus was taken by me balancing precariously in a hairdressers shop window! Note to self: buy step ladders for the next wedding. I was also very happy to be invited to join them for their meal which was incredibly delicious. After eating Russ gave one of the best speeches I have ever heard, before we left for venue number 3, The Star on Chester Road. This was where the party really began. Here Chris gave his speech, there was some family singing, and we discovered that some of the sea shanty choir had transformed into an excellent ceilidh band! This part of the evening entertainment was chosen to reflect Chris who is from the North. Later in the evening “Baz & Dave” gave us a cockney knees up to reflect Russ from the South.

It was a truly superb day which flung most traditions out of the window and saw two fantastic people celebrate their love for each other with a happy host of loving friends and family. I was honoured to be a part of it. Thanks guys!
